July 07, 20243 min read

Today, on Global Forgiveness Day, we celebrate the transformative power of forgiveness in fostering peace, healing wounds, and promoting reconciliation. This day serves as a profound reminder of how letting go of past grievances can lead to a brighter, more joyful future. It’s a fitting occasion to announce the release of my new book, Divorce Is Not A Destination, A.A.C.T. In Joy!: A Path to Overcoming Heartache, Rebuilding Confidence, and Living with Joy After Breakup. This book is a guide to help individuals navigate the often tumultuous journey of healing after a breakup or divorce.

Global Forgiveness Day

Global Forgiveness Day, observed annually on July 7th, encourages people worldwide to embrace the liberating power of forgiveness. It’s a day dedicated to reflecting on the grievances we hold and the ways in which they impact our lives. Forgiveness is not just about absolving others; it’s about freeing ourselves from the burden of resentment. It’s about finding peace within and paving the way for personal and communal healing.

The Journey of Forgiveness in Divorce and Breakup

Divorce and breakups are some of life’s most challenging experiences. The Holmes Rahe Stress Inventory ranks divorce as the second most stressful event in a person’s life behind the death of a spouse. It’s understandable that a breakup or divorce might leave emotional scars that can take years to heal. The journey to recovery is complex and multifaceted, but one essential element is forgiveness. Forgiveness allows us to release the pain and anger that can keep us tethered to the past, hindering our ability to move forward.

In my own journey, I found that forgiveness was a crucial step in overcoming heartache and rebuilding my life. It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight. It was a process of acknowledging my pain, accepting the reality of my situation, and choosing to let go of any resentment that was holding me back. Through this process, I discovered a path to joy and fulfillment that I now share with others through my book and programs. And it all started with forgiving myself so I could love on myself through the process.

Dr. Summerour writes beautifully and grippingly. I feel her compassion, empathy, and wisdom permeate my mind as I read this book. She utilizes narrative storytelling, cognitive pedagogy, and through these, imparts clarity, calm, and peace. She makes healing seem doable and indeed, she herself has demonstrated that it is. — April Powell-Willington, Mother, Deputy Attorney General, Partnership for Peace & Transformative Impact – Board of Directors Chair

Introducing Divorce Is Not A Destination, A.A.C.T. In Joy!

Divorce Is Not A Destination is designed to guide readers through the healing process using the A.A.C.T. framework: Accountability, Alignment, Communication, and Trust. These pillars provide a structured approach to rebuilding one’s life post-divorce.

Forgiveness is interwoven throughout the A.A.C.T. framework. Here’s how it fits into each pillar:

  • Accountability: Forgiveness starts with being accountable to yourself. It means acknowledging your feelings and taking ownership of your healing journey.

  • Alignment: Aligning with forgiveness involves letting go of past hurts that do not serve your future. It’s about aligning your heart with peace and your actions with compassion.

  • Communication: Effective communication requires forgiving yourself and others for past missteps. It opens the door to honest and healing dialogues.

  • Trust: Trust is built on a foundation of forgiveness. By forgiving, you can learn to trust again, both in yourself and in the potential for new relationships.
